My bank are the stupidist ever. In this sleepy town if you wear a suit everyone treats you like you are respectable. I was waiting by the customer service counter and nobody was about. I hearda rumour the one camera in reception didn’t work. A member of staff returning from lunch buzzed the door right next to me. This door is on a slow spring. Nobody will believe this but on the other side of the office the barred door to the saferoom was open and the safe was wide open too. I stopped the door with my foot. My heart was pounding with fright. I pushed through the door everyone at the far end of the office had their backs to me and were talking and working. I had tunnel vision and felt rigid with fear.I went for it and stepped through the door turning to the left and straight ahead to the safe room. I kept looking straight ahead so all the would see is my hair and a suit. I made it to the safe room! The small gym bag I had was nearly empty. As quick as I could I took stacks of money off the tray in the safe and stacked them in my bag. It was getting very full and I cannot believe all the money fitted. The zip was difficult but the bag did close. I held the bag low instead of carrying it on my shoulder so it would be hidden by the office desks. As I turned left at the end of the desks and faced the door to the lobby one of the senior bank staff in a dark greysuit and striped shirt was at the end of the office. A female member of staff turned and walked away from him. As he turned I swore at at that moment he was going to look at me. I couldn’t believe he didn’t. He walked off through another door and disappeared. Using the edge of my suit jacket I opened the staff door so as not to leave prints. I did the same on the inner reception door and the outside. The street was mostly clear and nobody looked in my direction. I took a quick turning off and a long walk to the other side of town. I caught a bus from there. The bus travelled right past the bank on the way out of town. A single police car was parked outside. What I read in the newspaper was the police had blocked off the main road and arrested a man dressed in jeans and a black jumper who had been seen fleeing the area of the bank. Everyone say he was the man who had left the bank in a hurry for his car. It seems the police believe he’s a shady character and had an accomplice which explains why they didn’t find the money on him. I have the $50,000. He might not talk if he’s hiding somethign worse like drugs or worse. He’s going down for it and never did it. I’m in the clear!

This is a story which could have actually happened. What did happen is I didn’t comit a crime I knew I could do and do quietly and have a change of getting away without fuss. I read in the newspaper a couple of yearslater the crime had been committed by a man forcing their way in to the bank which setoff the silent alarm and the police caught the man with the money as he tried to escape.
