My wife suffers from anxiety and depression. I am committed to loving her and staying with her until “Death do us part.” But I pretty much hate my life and what it’s become. Because of her depression and anxiety, we really don’t have any friends anymore. Our kids avoid being in the same room as her so they won’t have to put up with her nagging and wanting to control every little situation- micromanaging. We don’t go out and do anything fun. She just sits in her chair and does nothing but troll Facebook, watch TV, and nag about things while she cries at the drop of a hat.

I have been empathetic for years but I’m so fed up with it. Today she told me “I know you don’t like me,” and “I know you don’t know what to do with me.” And the thing is, she’s right. I don’t rely on her for my happiness, but she is always such a drag- one of those people that s*** the joy out of every situation. Yes, she is on medication. No, it doesn’t really help.

I want to quit so badly. Our kids are almost out of the house- that’s not an issue. If I hadn’t vowed to stay with her, I would’ve left a long time ago. I feel so trapped and helpless. I feel like a caged animal who could do so much more if I were released from my vows. But I am a man of my word. If she approached me tomorrow and said she released me from my vows, I’d gladly move on and not look back. That’s awful, isn’t it? We are coming up on 20 years of marriage, but I’m worn. I’m tired of this.
