I hate that I feel this way, but I feel like I am a much better nurse than most of the nurses I’ve worked with/met/etc. This is not really because I’m the smartest/most experiences or whatever… I actually talk to my patients. I actually CARE about them. My patients apologize to me when I do colostomy care of change the dressing of a stinking, infected wound…. I ask them why they are sorry… and they tell me they know it’s gross or inconvenient or time consuming… and I say hey! this is my job, and i know this isn’t the card that you asked life to deal you. I don’t mind… and they are so relieved. I see nurses saying s***** things about their patients RIGHT IN THE ROOM WITH THEM, like they can’t hear. So, what? Because they’re old and probably hard of hearing that they don’t have the cognitive ability to understand what you’re saying? And then the nurses who purposely blow off doing dressing changes, or will altogether not give meds to a notoriously difficult patient because they’re lazy. To top that all off, they don’t even wanna help each other. I always help my coworkers with orders and admissions, and I STILL get my work done and my people taken care of. I just don’t know… no one uses common sense or time management and they all seriously lack compassion and empathy. I’m so glad I became what I did, despite the stress and long hours, because when my patients tell me they’re glad I’m working today, that’s the best damn feeling in the world. My coworkers can s*** it.
