Friday we received our inheritance that has been t****** for 2 yrs as the will was sorted out. We told no one that just under a million was wired into our account. As fast as we could we paid every single thing off in our lives. Mortgage, credit cards, school loans, 1 car, other was paid for. Kids braces. My husband set up a separate account for the taxes on it, so we don’t have to think about that when the time comes. Next week we start putting back into the college funds, which we have done a good job with so far. Ditto for retirement fund. It was anticlimactic because it is when you first hear you will inherit money that you get excited, and start mentally planning how you will spend it. Dream of being debt free. Then the estate attorney tells you this will take some time, final bills of the deceased must be paid. And even now we have to wait one more year for the final payout, the law allows creditors a certain amount of time to collect on deceased’s monies owed. We finally moved on with our lives thinking it would never happen. Paperwork shows up from time to time to sign, fed exes come and go. Then one day…Friday ….it happened. And now we owe no one anything. We also don’t tell because we know my family will expect some of it. We didn’t even tell the kids how much it was. Just enjoying the financial breathing room. And putting it away. We weren’t living beyond our means but it sure does help knowing we do t have to sweat it anymore.
