I am 34 and the only successful person in my extended family. I can’t talk to any of my cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, or even my mother about anything anymore, because they are living a completely different lifestyle than me. They are all either unemployed or underemployed, high school dropouts with no marketable skills. I have a Master’s degree from an Ivy League school and a career I love. I waited until I could afford children to have them, and my days are filled with happiness. It’s getting to the point where I just avoid contact with everyone except my mother. There is no way for me to even be around them without looking like I am bragging about my wealth. I pull up in my new Sienna (for the kids – need the minivan), and park it next to their 20-year-old fords. I walk in wearing khakis and a button-down shirt, which is my casual wear, and they are all in Goodwill sweats. They talk about how miserable things are for them, and I just have to nod my head and agree, even though things are great for me. I genuinely can’t think of anything to talk to them about that doesn’t make me seem pompous. Summer plans? They are working or looking for jobs. I’m going to the Bahamas with the family for two weeks. I wonder if anyone else is in the same situation. I just wish the rest of my family would get their s*** together.
