I am asexual, and naturally all of my friends are not. Unlike a lot of asexuals I’ve talked to who are comfortable with themselves and other people’s sexualities not affecting them, it makes me extremely uncomfortable when my friends and family talk or joke about s**, partially because of my first introduction to s** being upsetting and partially because I really can’t see how they feel about it from their point of view. It seems unnatural and disgusting to me, though logically I know it’s not. I can’t even listen to someone gush about a celebrity crush without feeling awkward. I can’t even notice when I’m being flirted with, and I feel alienated and afraid when someone’s attracted to me.
The thing is I never tell anyone that it bothers me because I know that it’s unrealistic… they’re the normal ones and I’m the weird one, and every time I mention my discomfort people assume I’m trying to establish myself as some superior human being for being asexual, which isn’t the case at all. Really, it just makes me feel evolutionarily broken sometimes.
