My great grandmother was a devout Christian. She lived a simple life. Her house was small and it shook when we walked in it, but it was cozy. She had a small television but no central heat or air, and only a small gas heater to keep her warm in the winter. She had no telephone. Certainly no computer or any sort of electronics besides her small tv.
She wore a dress, an apron and a bonnet every day that I recall. She would spent her time sitting outside on her front porch if the weather was nice enough, watching people pass by on our country road and waiting for someone to come pay a visit.
Her faith was astounding. Firm and unshakable. She had no doubt whatsoever that God is real and that He loves us all. Despite her life of poverty and hardship, and old age full of pain and suffering, her faith was never broken. Sometimes I wish the crass and critical non believers of the day could have met her. Maybe if they had seen her certainty, her kind and sweet spirit, her strength, they would have seen how God was with her. Maybe if they could have heard her pray they would have felt God’s presence the way I did. She passed away in her 90’s when I was around the age of 14. That’s over ten years ago now… but I can still hear her aged voice singing gospel songs, and I can still hear her wrinkled hands clapping along to the tune.
