I love my sister, but I don’t like her. Here’s why.

I am thankful that my husband and I have a roof over our heads during this difficult financial time. I am thankful my mother allowed us to live here with her and my older sister. I know we could very well be on the street or living out of our vehicle.

However, my sister makes it so very frustrating to live here.

She is over 30 years old (older than me) but she acts like a lazy teenager. She never cleans up after herself. EVER. She will cook and leave the dishes piled in the kitchen for a week until someone else finally gets fed up and washes them. She will toss laundry all over the laundry room, mixing up dirty and clean, after my mother spends hours cleaning and organizing. She leaves food rotting on dishes by her “spot” in the living room (where she spends every waking moment she’s at home watching television in her pajamas, even if we have company) until someone else moves them. She lets dishes and trash pile up in her bedroom until my mother finally goes and collects them. She uses and wastes the groceries everyone else buys. (i.e. cooking an entire package of hot pockets in one night, eating only half of each hot pocket, and leaving the half-eaten bits and the wrappers all over the place). She works, but she never gives my mother any money to help with the bills (something my husband and I do without fail every payday).

And she’s totally fine with her way of life. She’s on a gravy train! If I ever comment, “Maybe you could wash the dishes,” or ” maybe you could help me clean” she responds, “Yes, I could!” and then goes about her business without making any effort to even pretend.

Also, she has come into mine and my husband’s room and taken things, then denied it. She stole an entire bottle of rum and then lied about it when I found the empty bottle in her room. We had various things come up missing. We bought a lock for our bedroom door. She got offended… then proceeded to pick the lock and come in anyway. We caught her on video. My mother confronted her, but of course now everything’s back to the way it was. I love my mother but she hasn’t got the heart to do anything about my sister. I don’t want to see her being sponged off of. But I’m too afraid to confront my sister, too. She has an uncanny ability to make me feel wretched about myself even if I’m in the right.

So I’m looking forward to the day my husband and I can finally get back on our feet. I’ll miss being so close to my mother, but I will not miss living with my sister. I’ve lost hope she’ll ever ‘grow up’.
