I think my newlywed husband is functionally illiterate and hiding it from me. I just thought he was picky about books but, when we moved in together, I started to see signs that he can barely read. I can teach him but, when I tried to talk to him about it, he got really upset. He told me I was judging him because we come from different classes but I wasn’t trying to. I feel bad, I’ve bought him so many books and it turns out he was buying audiobooks of the books I got him to pretend he read them. I’m not going to give up on teaching him though.

  • He’s embarrassed that he can’t read but it’s nothing to be ashamed of. People learn to read at 70 and 80 years of age and even get their GED at that age. I think it’s freakin awesome to be teaching someone something so important and to see that light bulb turn on in their head. You can see it in their eyes that they’re getting it. I love books and would love to have someone who loves to read too, to sit down and read with. Would be so nice.

      • Thank you. He must be embarrassed, especially because he worries that I’m “too smart” for him. I’ll be patient with him.
