I’ve never been a particularly loyal person. I’m self-aware enough to know this. I’m a liar and a secret teller and a gossiper. I just enjoy drama. I find it both ridiculous and amusing how far some people will go over a petty issue. Only, I think I’ve found the one person I’m not willing to betray. She’s my best friend. She has cuts on her wrists and she’s always so sad.
We had this huge fight last month. I found out she lied to me and I got so mad I couldn’t even look at her. Hypocritical, I know, but I never actually lied to her. Not really. Not like she did to me. We made up, of course, but it’s what came after that scared me. She had hugged me, so tight I could barely breathe, and said, “I’m so sorry. Know that I’m so sorry. I’ll never do that again. I love you more than everything.” She’s not the type for emotional outbursts, or for emotions at all, and I knew she was being honest. Then she said, “I thought I had ruined this friendship. I wanted to die.”
Now I’m afraid. I’m afraid the person I was is going to come back and ruin this. I’m afraid I’m going to betray her. I’m afraid that I’ve stopped being the one thing saving her and am slowly transforming into the thing that’s going to kill her.
