A rich girl wrote a play. Her dad owns most of the small town, so it was no trouble for her to rent the small local theatre. Got up a cast and put on the show.
The play was horrible! There were a few funny moments but they were clearly stolen word-for-word from a movie. Most of the story made no sense. There were plot points- BIG plot points- that happened in dramatic scenes, then were never explained, never even referred to again. The pacing was completely off. There were a dozen little stories going on and half of them weren’t wrapped up whatsoever. There were too many characters who had no purpose at all, and she obviously wrote the play so she could make herself the star. She gave herself a song and dance number! It was a poorly written play that seemed like it had been whipped up in an hour. Her rich dad could have at least afforded an editor. She wasn’t even a very good actress. She over-acted every scene.
But for the most part people ate it up like dogs devouring kibble. They kissed her a**, praised her amazing talent, and as a result she made loads of money on ticket sales, got interviews in the newspaper…. Even a TV personality from a neighboring city came and then did a glowing review.
But the play was s***! I don’t know if people around here are completely uncultured and really loved it, or if they were just trying to get on her rich dad’s good side. Maybe they thought they couldn’t say anything negative because of his power in the community.
But yeah. Rich girl went on to become a model, and is now living the high life. No surprise.
I haven’t thought about this in a long time, because the play was years ago. But I was recently speaking to the woman who rents out the theatre, trying to find out how much it will cost because I’m working on a play myself- writing is something I’ve devoted my life to. She asked me if I remembered that girl’s play and how WONDERFUL it was. When I admitted I didn’t like it, she couldn’t understand why.
Maybe I’m the one who is uncultured.
