So i was walking home from school today, and i was feeling a bit tired, i wasn’t having a very pleasant day, and this lady was walking behind me. She was exercising so she was walking a little bit faster than me. As she passed me she smiled at me and said “hi”. I returned the smile and said “hi” back, and she carried on with her walk.

I found myself feeling very touched by what she had done, and i felt a warm feeling of satisfaction.

It’s not so much what she said but more the gesture of making an effort to be kind to a stranger, especially one that is having a bad day.

I often think about this, and wonder why more people don’t make an effort to smile at a passing stranger, or give a nod of acknowledgement. A year ago my cousins friend was contemplating suicide, she was walking home on the afternoon that she planned to do it when a passing stranger gave her a kind smile and asked her “how are you?”. She was so affected by this small gesture of kindness she broke down into tears and called her Mother, telling her everything.

I guess the point of this confession is to thank that lady that passed me today, for that small gesture of kindness that made my day just that little bit much better.
