“I love you as a friend” sounds a lot like “Yes I love having you around to make me happy, but I don’t want to put effort into you or your feelings”

If you aren’t willing to love them the way they deserve, stop trying to keep them around….. Step aside so they can find someone that will treet them the way you wouldn’t.
