Humility is a lost art in this day and age–especially in affluent neighborhoods like Newport Beach, California. Have we as a society lost all abilities to feel shame in the tangled midst of trying to vie for the most likes? Is social currency of more value than actual social skills and tact? I just turned 14 and come from a higher SES family, but my parents have always taught me the value of not taking after the examples of my peers, who insist on flaunting their wealth via acquisitions. My parents always raised me to quietly work to help and serve others less fortunate through humanitarian efforts. I’m not religious, but I do believe in efforts to help humanity achieve higher than its current state of disrepair. I can’t help but to notice how high society is more trashy than ever. I’ve been taught that those with true wealth never feel the need to boast, and I just feel sick seeing what’s going on around me–especially those friends, who abuse their parents’ wealth and seem completely consumed by, well, consumerism. Why did I have to grow up in such a degenerate era?
