You are not in touch with the thousands of ways you judge people and yourself each and every moment of your life. You do not grow up in a Western society without absorbing these prejudices, I’m sorry, no one is special, just some people are aware of it and some people aren’t. The ones who are aware of it try to overcome it, the ones who aren’t just spew it, and the ones who try to be “right” saw “I have no prejudices” and have never lived in Bed-Stuy or the south side of Chicago or have never been to prison or otherwise live in a nice safe bubble and get all their impressions about others from TV or the net.
I’m from Jamaica, Queens, NY. Grew up in a broken household where my abusive Father used to punch my Mother in the face. I lived in fear of my dad and went to PS. 40 and got shot by a stray bullet on Guy R. Brewer as a kid. I also witnessed a police officer murder a older kid I knew from our neighborhood so I seen how horrible life can be, but I refuse to get caught up in hate. All that will do is destroy you from within. Hate is nothing but a useless distraction from what’s good in life. Racism, bigotry, xenophobia, sexism are not constructive behaviors. They are not conducive to the way life should be. Life shouldn’t be about anger and pain, it should be about love and understanding, caring and compassion for others. That’s what drives me to keep going everyday.
