I have burn scars from where I burned myself with matches to prove to myself I wasn’t weak; when people saw them on my shoulder I told them it was a freak accident and that I had slipped and fell on some random hot coals. I told this lie so much that now sometimes I think that’s what had happened and I need to remind myself that it didn’t.
