I just got a new job with a huge raise. My wife just had her hours cut, and am forced with a huge cash flow shortage. It is her dream job, and I understand why she wants to stay. But she told me I was not allowed to chase my dream of going into business for myself when I was looking for my new job. Now I am applying for delivery jobs and bar tending jobs in my mid 30’s. Which wouldn’t be so bad, but I find myself resenting my wife because of her insistence that I set aside my dreams for our family, but she doesn’t have to even put hers on hold when it is actually hurting our situation.

  • I feel you. I gave up my dreams of acting and comedy for my wife. She took a job in a new city and I do office supply orders now because she doesn’t want me out looking for comedy show clubs/acting gigs and taking acting training classes. But she also told me to stop teaching History at school because of all the teacher sex scandals (that and I have to recertify in our knew state). But now her job cut her hours and salary and transferred her office further out so our babysitter costs skyrocketed, fuel increased, etc.

The only thing I can suggest is while it sucks setting your dreams aside but if your planned business can be done in steps, maybe you can do little ‘jobs’ on the side until the income overtake your main jobs. I did acting and comedy on the side while getting my teaching certs (the first time). After my 3 years my income from acting/comedy was overtaking my teaching salary (in 2005 that was $45,000) so hopefully you can do the same and convince your wife that it will work.
