The Second Amendment provides U.S. citizens the right to bear arms and was ratified in December 1791.The Revolutionary War had ended only 8 years prior. Did they ever dream that today’s assault rifles used by the military to do nothing but kill would be available to everyone? I seriously doubt it. In 1791, common guns included muskets and flintlock pistols. According to the Washington Post, a “Typical Revolutionary-era musket” had a one-round magazine capacity, and it could fire around three effective rounds per minute – in the hands of the most skilled wielder. Its maximum accuracy range had to be within approximately 55 yards. Today everyone still has this same right, but weapons have advanced far more than our forefathers could have ever imagined. Personally, I think that rifles, shotguns and handguns should be good enough and the only weapons people should be able to have. If people didn’t have AR-15’s, M-16’s and AK-47’s, among others, we wouldn’t have the mass shootings that we seem to have more and more of with no end in sight. Of course, this is just my opinion.
