My girlfriend and I got together because we were best friends for a couple years, we were both frustrated with dating, and things just naturally started happening between us. She’s absolutely completely in love with me. I don’t feel the same, and I don’t think I ever will. It’s just not there for me, partially because she doesn’t get me as well as she thinks she does, and I can’t figure out how to explain this. The cliche “I love you but I’m not IN love with you” applies. I think she could do better than me, and honestly I think I could do better than her too (I mean “better” as in a more appropriate match, not as in hotter or smarter or richer). But she’s still my best friend so I pretty much just treat her the same as I did before, just with physical stuff added (which I’ll admit is really good). I can’t break it off at this point because I’d lose the closest person to me in my life; we’ve been through a lot together, and it would devastate her if I started looking for someone else. But I know if I stay with her I won’t be happy in love. So basically I’m just trying to give her ways to figure out that I’m not that good for her, and that I’d be much better as her bestie, so that she’ll move on someday.
