Today I found a hawk near my front yard. It was beautiful with white and brown markings. It had been injured somehow and couldn’t fly. It was just sitting there. I walked up to it to see if it would fly away but didn’t. I got my camera and took some pictures of it. I was thinking about what I was going to do. I didn’t think I could catch it so I was thinking I could call a wildlife rescue place and maybe they’d come get it. My dad was with me and he came over with our two dogs and I wish I had told them to stay back harder or stopped them from coming over, but I was too busy taking more pictures. The hawk circled around watching the dogs as they got close. One of my dogs wouldn’t mess with it other than to check it out…. but the other one is a Pitbull. My dad knows how she gets… why did he let her even get close, walk over with her and why didn’t I stop her from getting close. Suddenly, she jumped on the hawk and bit it… everything happened so fast and there was nothing I could do, but maybe if I had been faster I could have stopped it. The hawk fell flat on the ground, still alive and then she was on it again and that was it. She had it by the neck slinging it around and ran off with it. It was dead. I can’t express how guilty and sad I feel that this beautiful animal died and how I feel at least partly responsible. One second it was alive, the next it was dead. I deleted all the pictures from my camera. I can’t look at them. I can’t look at something that’ll always remind me of what happened minutes, even seconds later.
