It started out as small things (shampoo, face wash, vegetables) that I wouldn’t scan at the self-scan in the grocery store. I always use self-scan because I’m embarrassed of the stigma of needing food stamps. I work a good government job, but it doesn’t pay enough to make ends meet. Then I started taking clothes in department stores, after trying them on in the stalls. The burning, sinking feeling was overwhelming and I was sure someone would know just by looking at me. But if they did, they never said. I always go out of my way to be nice to others, because I know how difficult the customer service industry is and I’ve always hated those who steal. I feel shame and guilt, especially now as I’ve gotten into a habit and thinking of stealing as a viable way to acquire things that I may or may not need. And, I recognize that the momentary relief and security I feel from getting something for nothing isn’t a way to live. But for the life of me, I’m having a hard time stopping. I worry about if I were to be caught and something as petty as a pen or groceries or a sweater prematurely ended my career. Even worse, I worry about the respect I’d lose from those I care about.
