So I was listening to Wipe Out from the Surfaris, I remembered that my 4th grade was supposed to do a play about the history of California: from the early settlers to the gold rush. I was really excited to take part in the performance, but the principal told us that the play was forced to be cancelled. That moment shocked me: I already have a costume waiting in the wings and I wanted the part where we would dance to Wipe Out. Yet 16 years to this day, I honestly think that the principal was right on pulling the plug on the play. I realized that the part I wanted the most was me dancing and singing like a Native American, of which I had no direct ancestry of. I don’t know which group protested our play but years later they’ve made the right choice. And I hated singing so no harm there.
