Covid was absolutely a devastating plague, claiming both the recklessly selfish and utterly desperate, most vulnerable people in society and yet a part of me can’t help but also wish it could have been the thing to wipe out resistance to critically important things like infrastructure, universal healthcare, basic income, vaccines, and creating broader support structures to catch more and more people that used to fall through the cracks. It’s a terrible thing because all the people who are lost to it due to their stubborn pride and ignorance are also still technically human and they came to their wrong conclusions in a very human way which means they could have possibly been brought to the light of reason in a similar way.. but when misinformation is so thick and so layered, it entrenches people far beyond even what the most primitive instinct would do, and the labor required to dig them out grows seemingly exponentially the further they dig.
We don’t yet have a more effective way to save people from the pits of depravity and greed that strengthen these demons of misinformation, not outside of the already labor-intensive, community driven methods already in place, and that fact saddens me.
I wish mythic plagues of bibilical nonsense were possible, to target only the “wicked” and cruel… but reality is impossibly complex and there is no such thing as a self-selecting kill virus to keep humans in check so they can advance in a positive fashion. Everything is randomized, and that is both a gift and a curse.
