I am a male high school teacher. I work with mostly other male teachers.
Once, in the faculty lounge, I was discussing student performance on the ACT with five of the other male teachers. We were all in our late 20s / early 30s except one teacher who was close to retirement. He was also ex-military and had a no-holds-barred way with words.
We started talking about one student, Emma (not her real name), who did much worse than expected on the ACT. Her chances of getting into a decent school were slashed. Suddenly, the oldest teacher spoke up and said, “With t*** like hers, she won’t need to go to college. They will open all the doors she needs.”
Needless to say I, like the other teachers, had noticed her figure before, but to have a teacher say it out loud was shocking. But the look we all gave each other that day seemed to say to me, “We all check these girls out. That’s one of the perks of teaching.”
That oldest teacher has since retired. Every now and then one of the other teachers who was with me that day will say that a student “reminds him of Emma”, and we all know what he’s talking about.
