During his papacy, Martino encouraged the ecumenical dialogue between the Western and the Eastern Churches. He was also known for normalizing cremation among Christians. Instead of graves, the so-called columbariums emerged as a way of revering the dead and keeping their remains. Of course, those who decided to bury their loved ones were permitted to do so.
