I would like to be able to enjoy Game of Thrones, or that show about pirates (I can’t remember the name now…) because I’m a fantasy geek, but all the s** and foul language totally turns me off. I know it doesn’t bother most people but I just can’t stand over-sexualized media. Why do they have to take a potentially awesome story and cover it with s** and foul language? Because s** sells, yes, I know. And foul language is hip. 99% of the population eats it up. But it ruins it for me. You can have a compelling show without all that crap. And ‘SOME’ r rated romance and ‘SOME’ foul language wouldn’t be that bad, but these people don’t understand how to use anything in moderation.
The bad thing is, I can’t explain this to most of my friends because they don’t get it. I’m 27 now and after spending my entire life being teased for being a prude, a goody-two-shoes, etc. etc., I’ve learned to keep my opinions to myself. It’s a sad world we live in when someone who has high moral values is ridiculed for it. I don’t judge others, either… I just automatically get shot down because of my personal tastes.
Well, anyway. I hope all fantasy media won’t start going that way, trying to fit into the mainstream with overloads of s** and foul language. But I fear it will. I think I preferred it when fantasy wasn’t mainstream, when my love of dragons, faeries, swords and sorcery made me a weirdo, and the mainstream media market wasn’t ruining everything I enjoy.
