After reading the ‘confession bear’ meme, I see it’s common that people feel worse for the abused/abandoned/neglected pets in the Sarah McLachlan ads than they do for the 3rd-world children ads, and I’ve figured out why.

The 3rd-world children are humans, which already puts them on top of the world. Humans have evolved into masters of adaptation and invention, look at all we’ve accomplished! We have genetic advantages, as well as generations of knowledge available to us to grow/catch food.

But the abandoned pets have unique disadvantages, because domestication has bred the survival out of them. We bring them into our urban dwellings, teach them to depend on us for food and water, and take away any chance they have of learning to provide for themselves, especially in an urban environment.

So please adopt a pet! They need our help more!
