I am in love with my best friend, and he is in love with me. Due to long distance, we can’t date. In order to keep us romantically happy, we let each other date other people until we can be together. I already went through one girlfriend that he dated for over six months, and it took a large toll on me because he started falling in love with her.
Recently, he started talking to another girl and won’t shut up about her. I told him that she was the only one I would tolerate letting him date, but secretly she’s driving a wedge between us, like last time. I don’t want to lose him, but I don’t want to feel like I’m controlling him. He said to me last night, “you know, you say that you like the girls I date, but then after we break up you’re all like ‘they’re ugly, they weren’t good enough, etc.’ Make up your mind already.” I told him that I was being a good friend and being nice while he liked them and dated him, but once they turned into an ex, it didn’t matter because they weren’t going to get back together.
Last night, he told ten stories about him and the new girl crush he had and their experiences together. He had mentioned before that she is just like me, except that she is sassier. I didn’t really talk while he went on and on and on about her, so finally he asked “Would you like me to not talk about _____ as much?” I said yes, and he said to me “well you should have said something, like a true friend.” That hurt and I immediately got defensive. Through gritted teeth I told him that a good friend sacrifices what they really think in order to let their friend be happy.
I don’t know if I can last through this relationship if he dates her. I’m already at my wit’s end, and he’s only “talking” with her.
