PLEASE READ: I often catch my mom driving distracted. Be it talking on the phone, (which I am pretty sure is illegal, or at least highly discouraged in my state) opening apps and scrolling through them, taking pictures, opening messages and reading them, etc. So when I first started catching her doing it, I was more alarmed. For example, “Mom WHAT ARE YOU THINKING YOU ARE GOING TO GET US KILLED!” But when I expressed concern for her and what she was doing, and what the aftermath could cause she gets really upset and acts like I just accused her of murder or something. Like, I’m sorry that I didn’t want you, and everyone else in the car to die. It is hard because she is driving our car distracted on her phone doing whatever, (that can wait five minutes) and she is looking down but still driving, (gaving up occasionally) and she is swerving out of the lines, she is a total hazard. BUT SHE DOES NOT COMPREHEND THAT. When she is swerving, I can’t just not say anything. (Or else we would wreck) So I say something like, “Mom, kinda we are starting to swerve a bit.” Or sometimes it has gotten so bad I have had to take the wheel. But she gets very upset. “I had it under control.” “I was just looking at something really fast, I wasn’t doing anything wrong because I wasn’t texting and driving.” (when she says that it makes me so mad) But what she doesn’t understand is if you are on your phone at all while you are driving, that is dangerous. It isn’t just texting that kills you. One click is all it takes. But I don’t know if she will ever understand that. (What is really ironic about all of this is that I am a teenager. I am in high school. If anyone would be on their phone all the time you think it would be me. But you would never catch me texting and driving. Because I know that is stupid. Sometimes I think she is the teenager not me. Haha.(; )
If anyone has any ideas on what to do, your advice is greatly appreciated. I feel like my family and I are in danger.
