So I saw the movie Frozen for the first time last night. It was good. Not great. Not awesome. Not the best movie in the whole world omgzzz that everyone seemed to think it was… at least not for me. It was just good. There were some good characters and a few nice songs, and some pretty animation. But I was underwhelmed. It actually had a lot of problems.
Elsa wasn’t given enough character development. She went from isolating herself for the safety of her sister and kingdom, a tragic character with a sad story…. to running away, not caring about her responsibilities and shirking her title of Queen to hide childishly from her problems. Throughout her Let It Go song (which I don’t get why everyone freaked out over. It sounds like your average Disney pop song to me) all I could think was, “Why are you doing this? Weren’t you concerned about everyone and everything back home? All it took was one accident for you to just give up and throw everything away so you can get out of your duties?”. Yeah, she came back in the end… but the whole thing seemed rather like a cop out.
Anna was much more interesting, so it’s sad that she’s not the ‘marketable’ character.
Also- the songs. OH MY GOD. Whyyy ? So many of the songs just seemed forced. They weren’t really enjoyable, they weren’t remarkable, and they seemed to be shoved in there just to fill up space. Ugh. So annoying.
And my last big annoyance. The modern lingo. In a fantasy, midevil setting- why are characters using phrases like “totally crazy!” . It just seemed out of place and annoying to me, like I was watching teenagers attempting to tell a classic story without having any grasp of good vocabulary. Movies like The Princess and the Frog and Brave did just fine without that crap, and so did the classics. It really cheapens the experience. same thing with Tangled. Why can’t they give them more befitting vocabulary? Kids aren’t stupid. they would still get it, plus they might actually learn some new words. But no, let’s throw the same mindless internet age slang into everything to make it COOLER. Sheesh.
But oh well. I know most people think Frozen is the best Disney movie ever. To each their own.
