I dont know how to interact with my niece who has down syndrome.

I babysit for my sister sometimes, and I love all the kids. I try, but its very hard. I try not to treat her differetly then the other kids. I try to play with her and talk with her like I do the others.

But, she doesnt really talk or emote much. She does smile and laugh occasionally, and she’ll point to things and stuff like that so its not like I’m completely in the dark. But a lot of the time she just sits there and stares when I try to interact with her. And if I try to discipline her for something like throwing toys, which granted doesnt happen too often, its the same story. She just stares at me.

I just wish i knew what she understood and what she didnt. I never know if what I’m telling her is registering in her head or not. I feel so bad for saying it, because I really do love her, but I just dont know how to interact with her. I constanty feel like I’m not doing a good job with her.

  • Keep doing what your doing by the sounds of it you’re doing fine. You will eventually learn her likes and dislikes and how she likes to communicate. Maybe the staring is she is also trying to work you out and how you do things.
