I am a middle-aged guy, and my boss is actually younger than me and a woman. I am in a female-dominated field, so that by itself isn’t surprising. I’m not too attractive. I am overweight. But the one thing I do have going for me is my height. I am 6’6″.

My boss is also overweight. But she has a beautiful face. I try to see the beauty in everyone, and I can see it in her. Even though she is my boss, I get the feeling she’s not very comfortable around me. She was kind of forced to hire me (long story), but I am really good at my job. She just seems very stand-offish with me.

Today there was a “bring your family to work” picnic, and I saw her husband for the first time. I think I know why she’s weird around me now. Her husband is like the shorter, fatter version of me. It’s eerie, actually, how much we look alike.

I wonder if she has noticed this too. Like, compared to what she has, I would be an upgrade, which is a rare position for me.
