I know I shouldn’t feel so happy about this, but the look on his face today was priceless.

There is this really obnoxious young guy at work. He’s just 21 and very open about his homosexuality. No, I don’t hate him for being gay. But I do hate that every single thing you say to him gets turned into some sort of innuendo or otherwise elementary-level joke. His car is covered with pro-Obama stickers.

I am 34 and politically Conservative. I try to be nice to everyone, but the only way for me to be nice to this guy is to avoid him usually.

Anyway, he found out today that he is being cut from full time to part time status, and as a result, will lose his benefits. Officially, this is because of a reduction in our workload.

My good friend in HR told me the truth. Because this guy leads a high-risk lifestyle (insurance code for gay), the company has to pay much more for his insurance than they would for a straight person the same age. By making him part time, they don’t legally have to cover his benefits anymore.

Part of me feels sorry for the guy, because I know he’s going to have a hard time finding a better job with benefits. But part of me is laughing at him too. In a way, he did it to himself.
