How do you feel about how I was treated at this shelter today ?
I had went to a shelter today and had changed my mind about staying there when I was told that the police wouldn’t drive me home in the morning. The woman who had been the director of the place (I’m assuming she was though I’m not sure) said to me “I’m not allowing you to get a phone call because you got into a fight with your mom.” She never inquired if there was a physical or verbal fight. She just assumed I put my hands on my mom and that I was a bad kid or something. I explained to her that I lived very far away from that area of downtown and she just said that I could stay overnight and get transported to a different building in the morning. Then the people that worked in that building would give me bus tokens to use to go to public housing, not to go back home.
Another lady had came in and was sympathetic while I was having a panic attack about the situation. I was trembling and she told me to calm down, gave me directions on how to go home and have me two dollars out of her pocket. The director of the place gave a dollar but then said “You have sunglasses on. I can’t even see who you are. Take your sunglasses off or I won’t give you my dollar for you to get on the train.” I told her I didn’t want to because I felt uncomftorble. (To be honest, I was wearing them because I was having sinus related eye problems).
She repeated herself until I obeyed her. I showed her my id instead. I felt like I was being punished. I explained to her prior that I had no money, bus pass or bus tokens and that I would be stranded downtown in a unfamiliar area. She didn’t care and had a smile on her face the entire time. She said something like “your in your 20s and you can do these things yourself, your grown, etc.” she really didn’t care. I even said I regretted walking out my house and finding a church that eventually got a police to drive me to the shelter. I admitted to making mistakes and etc. I felt like I was being punished because I got into a thing with my mom by someone who didn’t even know what was going between me and my mom to begin with.
