My fiance is a professional athlete, and it is really starting to wear on me. Don’t get me wrong, I support him in his career. I love his passion, and I know that it makes him happy. But it is also wrecking his body, and it makes our life hectic and unpredictable in a way that is not always welcome. I guess I’m just tired. Tired of following him across the globe to events, tired of missing him terribly when I stay home. The first year of our relationship was long distance, and even though we live together now, sometimes it feels like that has never really stopped. The thing is, he said this would be his final year, the Olympics the culmination of his career, but he didn’t get the result he wanted, and now he’s toying with the idea of competing one more year. I want to support him. I do. I know it’s important to him, to his identity. But I’m miserable. I feel like my life, and our life together is on hold, and has been for a few years. I’m ready to start moving again. I want to marry him, but we can’t afford the wedding until he’s retired. I want to travel with him without the anxiety of competition looming over us. Maybe we can even think about starting a family. But I can’t say any of this to him, because he’ll offer to retire, and that’s not what I want. He needs to do it in his own time, when he’s truly ready, or else he won’t be happy. And that matters to me. I’m so lost. I just don’t know what to do. Any advice is welcome.
