Do wifi people target certain areas or people?

It is currently Tuesday, 6/21/22
Last week, Thursday afternoon, I got a phone* and so I immediately opened it and set it up. For some reason or another the process was strangely slow, but I didn’t think much of it at the time. The next day, morning-afternoon my phone had been set up and I went about my day not noticing that at home our wifi had been “weird”.

I went to the next town over for some personal business and had plenty of wifi there, still the usual. When I had come home the wifi was there but the internet connection wasn’t, if there was internet connection it would be slow and cut off a lot; not even enough to play video games. My mother called someone from our wifi distributor(?) about the issue.

But I didn’t pay much attention for I went to visit my grandparents° the next day and they had plenty of wifi, but usually I’d always go home at night and sleep when it got late.

The next morning, Sunday this week, my mother had been complaining about the poor wifi and how when she called them they said^ they’d call her back but never did. And then yesterday I heard her say that she called twice and they said it looked fine one their end. Which was definitely weird.

They also said that we will have to update our router and subscription to get better internet. That was another red flag but it didn’t say anything. It’s really just $10 more but it’s getting annoying.

Not to mention but can fix it til Wednesday, tomorrow, but they have to come back Thursday to “upgrade it”. Am I crazy or does this kinda sound like a scam? Does this happen to anyone else?

*(yes I had a phone prior but that’s a different story)
°we had a family reunion
^they also said to unplug everything connected to the wifi box and cords, wait for 60 seconds and it should be d back to normal
