I Have An Official Diagnoses. After being told over and over that self-diagnosing is a bad idea, it bothers me that when I finally went to a professional all he did was ask me broad yes-or-no questions. Which means there wasn’t really thinking on his part. Which means I have no more confidence in that diagnoses than I did my tentative “this-sounds-like-what-I-have.” diagnoses.
Example. Asking someone “do you have mania?” assumes that they know exactly what mania looks like. I don’t think I have (hypo)mania, but key word there is “think” because I know that even professionals can miss mood disorders having that component. So, the shrink agreed with my self assessment but didn’t make me feel any more confident in it.
Especially when nothing else was really explored, except the “do you have mania?” question. Anxiety, maybe.
