One reason I dislike the internet is that it seems to eventually result in the chasing the lowest common denominator of pleasure. I can start off for an entire week carefully curating what I choose to interact with, but slowly and progressively I begin to pursue stimulation in a way that makes me feel less human. In time, I’m staring at a screen for hours on end, engrossed in things that I care little about, unable to pull myself away. And the content online reflects this. Things become multicolored, feuds are recorded with emotional outbursts and cynical diatribes, nothing really matters and everything becomes a conquest of attention.
A normal and healthy human impulse to recieve praise for one’s value to the community is redirected. It begins to color other aspects of life. Behaviours begin to lose their inherent worth, they are referenced to what is seen online. Even anonymously posting written observations, to recieve what? What prize is sought by doing this? What has sharing become? Sharing once being such a valuable human experience, now marked by irrelevance and self importance. How many youtube comments simply want the satisfaction of hearing themselves talk? I suppose there are just as many people walking around offline with the same tendency.
We interact with something we don’t quite understand, people included.
