I had a friend in high school who I legitimently loved. Like at the time I honestly felt like this was someone I could see myself with for the rest of my life. The problem was by the time I’d worked this out she was dating someone and we were going to college in separate states. By the time they’d broken up (which was because she’d cheated on him) it was becoming increasingly apparent something real bad was going on. She would accuse others of crimes but skip town when her own drug habits were catching up with her. She blatantly tried turning our old friend group against each other for no apparent reason. We all compared notes and realized she’d been subtly doing this for years. She even tried getting family and complete strangers involved. Eventually we all cut ties with her. What was really hard for me was it became clear I was the friend she’d contact if everyone was tired of her s***. That I was only there because she thought I’d never catch on. There’s a part of me that hates her, but a part of me that just wants to help her be a decent person. I haven’t heard from her in years though and if it continues that way I’m fine with that.

  • You can’t help her be a better person. Until she decides to get help for her behavior, you and everyone else is better off without contact with her.
