What I don’t like is when someone says, “That hair style belongs to our people,” or, “You can’t wear that outfit because it represents my culture and not yours. You aren’t even of descent.”
That pisses me off.
Take, for example, a senior in high school recently wore a traditional Japanese dress to her prom. She looked very beautiful and felt that it was a tribute to the Japanese history, as the style of the dress has been around for hundreds of years and she personally took a liking towards the history and culture of Japan. Everyone gave her shit about it because she wasn’t Japanese so they felt that she wasn’t “allowed” to wear.
Now look, I’m Italian. I don’t give one FUCK if someone who has no Italian blood running through their veins wants to adopt a very famous Italian hairstyle, wear traditional clothing, make homemade pasta, pizza, or learn the language and even want to move to Italy one day and become an Italian citizen. THEY FUCKING CAN IF THEY WANT TO.
The same thing goes with how everyone gave Kylie Jenner shit for wearing corn rows and posting a pic of it on Instagram. Yes, the original hairstyle stemmed from black culture, but why can’t she still wear it? It’s a goddamn hairstyle for fucks sake.
