Why should romance over the internet be any less real than romance in person?
If anything, one could say it’s potentially more sincere. You don’t gain the benefit of physical touch, and it’s often a lot of heartache, but we do it anyway. Desperation could lead to someone clinging to such small interactions, but love and hope are much fiercer driving forces.
Both are possible. That does not mean that desperation is more likely.
