TLDR I NEARLY pulled a gun on my roommate years ago. He never knew about it and we are going to keep it that way. OK? Cool.
I had just finished my bachelor’s degree and was living with two roommates. The first roommate had also graduated that year and got a full-time 9-5 job. The other was finishing up his last year in school.
On this particular day I just got back home from one of my graduate classes around 11am. The roommate with the full time job called me around 11:30. I’m not sure what he was calling about. Around noon the other roommate and I hear a sound coming from the garage. (A little secret is that this house we were renting had a garage door that does not always latch properly and you could force it up from the outside. I would do this all the time when I ride my bike home from campus and don’t want to go in the front door and walk all the way around to open the garage from the inside. At this point I am the only one who was doing that because I am a lazy f***.) Anyway this roommate and I are wondering what the hell is going on. The third roommate should be at work and it’s a 30 minute drive home for him. He made no indication on the phone that he was coming home when I talked to him. About 10 seconds have passed and I am processing all this information. It did not seem likely that it was our roommate in the garage. There must be someone in the garage stealing our stuff or they might break into the house through the garage.
Our bedrooms are at the end of the hallway and there is no escape other than going towards the garage (also could jump out our windows but a little impractical). Still at 10 seconds and I quickly go to my safe and grab my new handgun. I’m sticking my head down the hall with the gun concealed behind my bedroom door (POINTED AT THE FLOOR), ready to bring it up and aim if this person comes out of the garage into the house. The shot is about 20 feet and they would likely be at an initiative deficit. About 30 seconds total have passed when the SHOULD-BE-AT-WORK-PROFESSIONAL-9-to-5 roommate walks in surprised to see us home and not on campus. I quickly put the gun away and HAD NEVER ACTUALLY AIMED IT AT HIM AT ANY POINT.
I don’t think he even had a good excuse for going through the garage and not just through the front door. He had a house key. We also had a lock-box with the house key 5 feet from the front door.
He has no idea that we thought it was a burger or worse. (It should be noted that we did not live in a safe neighborhood and about 2 months prior someone tried to break in through our front door.)
