My cat was attacked by a dog when I was 8, and staggered into the house, somehow made it upstairs and started meowing at my bedroom door. I just thought she wanted to come in, so I didn’t get up. When I finally got up and opened the door, she was lying there, dead, in a pool of blood. I never fucking forgave myself for an innocent creature begging desperately for help from the person who is supposed to protect her, and no help came and she bled to death. The happy ending to this story is that the dog later attacked the much smaller dog of my next door neighbor, ripping the top of her skull off, and the neighbor shot the dog about 20 times with a .22 rifle, just kept firing and firing and re-loading. Then he dug a hole, put the dog in the hole and stamped on her with heavy boots and buried her. The dog’s owner never found out why his dog disappeared.
