I’m an attorney, a lifelong republican and I voted for Donald Trump.

So far I’ve read 213 pages of the Mueller Report and I don’t understand why Mr. Mueller didn’t subpoena the President, and why is he leaving it up to Congress to bring charges against the President when it’s very clear that Donald Trump did in fact commit 11 acts of criminal obstruction?

Congress can no longer look the other way, they must impeach the president…

  • Yeah but they don’t want die-hard Trump fanboys to make a martyr out of him. Plus that leaves the WH with Pence, who is like Trump but smarter, so Dems would be worse off in the long run.

  • I don’t think Mueller wanted to deal with the hairy question of whether or not a sitting president can/should be indicted. And he’s a pretty by-the-book straight-shooter, so he just may not have felt like he could prove it beyond a reasonable doubt. As for the subpoena, I think he felt like he got all the info he was going to get anyway, and forcing the prez to testify to a GJ is another hairy legal question. Guess he mostly figured it was for Congress to sort out vis a vis their oversight/investigation and impeachment powers.

I seriously doubt this Congress will impeach – they’d rather expose him but let the voters decide. Impeachment could raise a lot of Republican resistance and cost them the election. I (mostly a Democrat, but not a left-winger) agree impeachment is probably the right thing to do (not to mention his violating the emoluments clause and just generally mismanaging the govt), but the big national Democrats are doing very complex political calculus between trying not to lose in 2020.
