When I was 17 i tried going to my doctor because I’m extremely depressed and anxious all of the time. But I don’t want my parents to know. On the day of my appointment, after all the anxiety of the appointment they told me that I couldn’t see the therapist without my parents because of my age. It was devastating and I’ve never been back. I still wonder all the time how my life would be now if they had let me keep the appointment.

  • You are old enough to get help all by yourself Quit stalling and get some anti-depressant medication and see a therapist.

  • I’ve seen a therapist since I was 12 years old. Why are you afraid to tell your parents? Mental illness is way too over-stigmatized, and I bet if you told your parents at least a little bit about your depression and anxiety, they would get you a therapist and give you the support you need (well, if they’re good parents). I think therapy helps a lot because it’s very refreshing to talk about all your issues without any fear of judgement. I don’t think I would be able to cope with my problems without some outlet to talk about them.
