I’m so depressed all the time and I can’t stop cutting myself, but I’m too scared to say something because I don’t want my parents to try to put me on drugs to make me not me, I’m 15.

  • First of all, the types of drugs you might be prescribed for severe depression don’t turn you into a different person, so don’t worry about that. They just take the edge off of severe depression so you can function normally. And you don’t have to take them forever, either. Many people learn to cope without antidepressants after they have dealt (through talk therapy) with whatever is causing their depression. Some people even choose not to use antidepressants.

Second of all, any good parent would want to know about their child having these issues so they can get some help with their anxiety and be happier. You know your parents better than any internet stranger. If you don’t think they will take your problem seriously, or if you think they will overreact or respond in an unhelpful manner, you can talk to your school counselor about this problem. Cutting behavior is fairly common in girls with overwhelming anxiety. Any school counselor will be familiar with the issue and will know how to help.

I think the bottom line is that you need to see a talk therapist. There are reasons you are feeling like you need to cut, and talking to someone who can help you figure that out (and how to stop) will be a good thing for you.

  • Every time you feel like cutting yourself, smoke a little weed to mellow you out.
