I’ve always thought of myself as being happy but I’ve been through a lot in life and am now realizing I’m not the optimist I thought I was. I’m considering going to a therapist but I’m afraid what I tell them could get me taken away from my parents.

Unless you killed someone or did extremely heavy drugs you won’t be taken away from your parents. Don’t know where you got that idea from. Therapy’s meant to be kept confidential. You could say you jerk off to photos of turtles and imagine the turtle is your principal. They won’t tell anyone unless it’s harming you or others severely. They’ll also tell you if they’re going to say anything. It’s illegal if they don’t.
What if I talk about drug abuse in my home or sometimes not being able to even afford food?
If you’re not the one doing drugs, it should be fine. If it’s heroine or an illegal drug that your family is doing, still no. Check this website for some info: https://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/if-i-tell-psychologist-crime-i-committed-can-i-trouble.html
They won’t take you away from your family. If your especially worried, just say to your therapist that you struggle with food and drugs in your family but you still love them and don’t want to be separated. If the situation is so dire that you were starving to death the government would’ve intervened already anyways. Nothing to do with therapy.
Best of luck, hope you can get your life back on track soon.
Sorry links are a little weird on this website. I had to split it into three parts to make it work. Just put it all together no spaces. Here.

IMPORTANT: just remember to check your governments laws. I’m going off of Austrlias guide lines. I’m pretty sure it’s the same for America and some, if not most of Europe. Just do a simple google search like ‘are therapists required to report crimes or bad family living conditions to the government in (insert country or state)?’,
